Will Beta Blockers or Other Medications Interfere with HeartMath Sensors?

Find out how beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and other medications may affect HeartMath sensor readings, HRV results, and coherence scores. Includes guidance for individuals with heart rhythm irregularities.

Answer:

Beta blockers and calcium channel blockers do not interfere directly with the HeartMath sensor hardware or software. The emWave® and Inner Balance™ systems will continue to detect and record your heart rhythm patterns accurately.

However, these medications can influence your heart rate variability (HRV). Since they work by lowering heart rate and relaxing blood vessel walls, you may notice lower HRV amplitude or coherence scores that respond more gradually. This is normal and expected when using HeartMath technology while on these medications.

In fact, because beta and calcium channel blockers relax and widen blood vessels, they may even help the system detect your pulse signal more easily. On the other hand, vasoconstrictors (medications that narrow blood vessels) may make it more difficult for the sensor to pick up your pulse accurately.

Important Note on Heart Irregularities:

Individuals with heart rhythm irregularities such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, or intense clusters of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), or children who cannot sit still, may experience difficulty using the emWave® or Inner Balance™ systems successfully. These conditions can produce irregular or unstable heart signals that the sensor may not interpret correctly.
