How to Set Up and Troubleshoot Your LIFX Bulb with the Global Coherence App
The Coherence Light Display is a beautiful feature in the HeartMath Global Coherence app that allows you to sync a LIFX smart bulb to your practice. As your coherence level changes, the bulb will change colors in real-time to reflect your current state, providing a completely hands-free, visual biofeedback experience.

Here are the complete instructions for setting up your bulb, along with troubleshooting steps if the app cannot find your device.
Part 1: Initial Setup (The LIFX App)
Before the Global Coherence app can use your bulb, it must first be set up on your home Wi-Fi network using the manufacturer's app.
-
Install your LIFX bulb into a lamp or light fixture and turn the power on.
-
Download the official LIFX app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
-
Follow the instructions in the LIFX app to pair the bulb to your home Wi-Fi network.
-
Important: Smart bulbs require a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Ensure your phone is connected to your router's 2.4 GHz band during this initial setup, not the 5 GHz band.
-
-
Once you can successfully control the bulb's color and brightness using the LIFX app, you are ready to link it to HeartMath!
Part 2: Connecting to the Global Coherence App
Once the bulb is on your network, turning on the integration is simple:
-
Open the Global Coherence app on your phone or tablet.
-
Tap the Settings menu (the gear icon).
-
Select Coherence Light Display.
-
Toggle the feature ON.
-
The app will briefly scan your local network, find your LIFX bulb, and sync with it.
Part 3: Troubleshooting Connection Issues
If you have set up the bulb in the LIFX app, but it is not showing up or connecting in the Global Coherence app, the issue is almost always a minor network or permission block. Try these quick fixes:
1. Enable "Local Network" Permissions (Most Common Fix) Your phone's operating system may be blocking the Global Coherence app from scanning for other devices on your Wi-Fi network.
-
For iPhone/iPad (iOS): Open your device's main Settings app. Scroll all the way down to your list of installed apps and tap Global Coherence. Ensure that the Local Network toggle is switched ON (green).
-
For Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Global Coherence > Permissions, and ensure the app has permission to find "Nearby devices".
2. Verify Your Wi-Fi Connection The device running the Global Coherence app must be connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network as the LIFX bulb. If your phone has switched to cellular data or a different Wi-Fi network (like a 5 GHz band or a guest network), it will not be able to "see" the bulb.
3. Check for LIFX Firmware Updates Sometimes, an outdated bulb will hide from third-party integrations.
-
Open your main LIFX app.
-
Check the device settings to see if your bulb has any pending firmware updates.
-
If an update is available, install it, wait for the bulb to restart, and then completely close and reopen your Global Coherence app.
4. Restart Your Devices If all settings and permissions are correct, try power-cycling the bulb (turn the lamp off and on again) and restarting your phone or tablet to refresh the network connection.
