Does HeartMath Offer a Finger Sensor? (Ear Sensor Alternatives)

Overview

Yes, HeartMath offers a finger sensor option called the emWave® Finger Sensor. However, this sensor is designed specifically for stationary, desktop use and is not compatible with our mobile apps.

Below is a breakdown of compatibility by device.

1. Desktop Software (emWave Pro / Pro Plus)

  • Finger Sensor Support: YES.

  • How it works: The emWave Finger Sensor attaches to your finger using a velcro strap. It plugs directly into the USB Sensor Module included with the emWave Pro system.

  • Best For: Clinical settings or home users who prefer not to wear an ear clip while sitting at a computer.

2. Handheld Device (emWave2)

  • Built-in Sensor: YES. The emWave2 device itself features a Thumb Sensor button on the front. You can place your thumb directly on the device to record a session without any wires.

  • External Finger Sensor: LIMITED. You can plug the external emWave Finger Sensor into the emWave2, BUT it will only function if the device is connected to the computer software. It does not work in portable/walking mode.

3. Mobile Apps (Inner Balance / HeartMath App)

  • Finger Sensor Support: NO.

  • Ear Sensor Only: The Inner Balance sensors (Lightning, USB-C, and Bluetooth Coherence Plus) are designed exclusively with an Ear Clip.

  • Why? The earlobe provides a stronger, more stable pulse signal for mobile use, whereas finger sensors are highly sensitive to hand movement and are best suited for stationary desktop use.

Summary Table: Sensor Compatibility

Platform Ear Sensor Finger Sensor Built-In Thumb Sensor
emWave2 (Handheld) Included Computer Mode Only Yes (On Device)
Inner Balance (Mobile) Included Not Compatible No
HeartMath App Included Not Compatible No

Recommendation

If you find the Ear Sensor uncomfortable or difficult to use:

  1. For Mobile: Unfortunately, there is no finger alternative. Ensure the ear clip is not too tight; it should just barely touch the skin.

  2. For Portable Use: Consider the emWave2, which allows you to use the built-in thumb pad without attaching anything to your ear.
